Men’s Tennis Falls, 6-3, at McKendree

BELLEVILLE, Ill. – The Tennessee State men’s tennis team was handed a 6-3 road loss at McKendree on Saturday. Senior Daniel Bernal (Bogota, Colombia) won in doubles and singles action on the day.

“We played a good opponent today,” TSU Head Coach Monroe Walker III said. “We got one doubles point and started down but we were up at No. 1 and blew the lead. Usually that won’t happen.”

TSU won one doubles match and a pair of singles matches on Saturday.

In No. 2 doubles play, Bernal teamed with Grant Maddox (Greenbrier, Tenn.) for an 8-6 victory over Ethan McCafferty and Abel Acuna-Moreno.

Moving to singles, Bernal used three sets to defeat Ben Muller in the No. 1 position, 3-6, 7-5, 10-8. At the No. 3 slot, sophomore Shashank Nautiyal (Delhi, India) also picked up a straight-set victory against Acuna-Moreno.

TSU’s Kyle Burton (Madison, Tenn.) played a tough match at No. 2 singles, ultimately falling to Alvarez in three sets.

“Daniel (Bernal) played great today. He played a ranked opponent and pulled it out,” Walker III said. “Kyle (Burton) lost but battled hard and it could have gone either way. Shashank (Nautiyal) dominated today and took care of business.”

"We have some things to work on, but I'm happy with the direction we are going."
