Men's Tennis Falls in Opener at MTSU

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Tennessee State University men’s tennis team dropped its first two matches of the season at Middle Tennessee State on Sunday.

The Tigers (0-2) were swept 7-0 and 7-0 in both matches against the Blue Raiders (6-3).

TSU employed the same five-man lineup in singles play of Darryl Hale, Daniel Bernal, Joe Daniels, Kyle Burton, and Grant Maddox for both matches.

In the first match of the day, Hale, Bernal, and Daniels fell in straight sets before Burton took the first set 6-4 in his match with Yannick Born. He eventually fell in three sets, though, to Born. Maddox then fell to Miguel Fernandez 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles play, Hale and Bernal fell 8-1 to Born and Gian Issa while Daniels and Burton lost 8-1 to Fernandez and Robin Riethmueller.

For the final match of the day: Hale lost to Dima Zyhmantovich, Bernal fell to Ettore Zito, Burton dropped his match up with Fernandez, and Maddox fell to Born, all of them in straight sets. Daniels fell to Riethmueller, but made it interesting with a 6-3 second set victory.

For the doubles’ portion of the second match, the pairings swapped, but the results remained. Burton and Daniels lost 8-1 to Born and Issa while Hale and Bernal fell 8-4 to Fernandez and Riethmueller.

The Tigers will next face Dayton on Feb. 27.
