Nashville, Tenn. - The Tennessee State University men's and women's tennis teams lost both matches to Western Kentucky on Saturday afternoon at the TSU Tennis Complex. The women (0-10) fell 7-0, as the men (0-9) lost 6-1 to the Hilltoppers.
In doubles action, the Tigers' number one tandem of Lawrence Washington and Shaun Ingram defeated WKU's Josh Smith and Arul Selvan, 8-3. The Tigers lost the remaining doubles contests as Andrew Fish/Craig Kirchgessner defeated TSU's William Simmons/Jared Asher, 8-2. The Tigers forfeited the third doubles contest.
Washington, a native of Canton, Mich., secured his fourth win of the season with a win (7-5, 4-6, 10-2) over Josh Smith. Western Kentucky's number two player Lance Freeman won 6-0, 6-3 over Ingram.
Fish knocked off Simmons, 6-1, 6-0 in the third slot, while Kirchgessner defeated Asher, 6-1, 6-0. In the fifth spot, Brody Freeman knocked off James Shelton 6-0, 6-0 to secure the Hilltoppers' fifth point. TSU forfeited the No. 6 position.
In women's doubles, the Hilltoppers' Monta Reinfelde/Madeline Phillips defeated Lauren and London Thomas, 8-1. In the second contest, Alex Crofford/Carolina Barboza won 8-1 over Melynda Simmons/Kryston Mason. Katrina Vucina/Morgan Freeman won 8-1 over TSU's Shardel Suber/Khadijah Williams in the third match.
Reinfelde swept Simmons (6-0, 6-0) in the top singles contest as Crofford handed London Thomas a loss (6-3, 6-1).
In the third slot, Barboza won 6-0, 6-1 over Lauren Thomas. Vucina managed a 6-0, 6-1 over Kryston Mason. Tennessee State's Suber fell 6-1, 6-0 to Phillips as Freeman collected a 6-1, 6-3 vicotry over Williams.
Tennessee State hosts senior day on Sunday, honoring Lawrence Washington in his final home match. The Tigers play their final regular season OVC match with Jacksonville State at 2pm inside the TSU Tennis Complex.
