MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. --- The Tennessee State men’s golf team had to wait an extra hour to take to the course for the Ohio Valley Conference Championship on Monday morning. Continual rain fall on Sunday and overnight caused for the first of two delays on the day. The second came an hour and a half into play, as the tournament was halted for 50 minutes due to lightning in the area.
Despite the stoppages the Tigers went on to fire an 11-over, 299, through the first of three rounds. The effort by TSU placed them in a tie for eighth with Austin Peay heading into Tuesday’s play. The Tigers are three strokes out of the top five and 13 behind the leaders, Jacksonville State.
John Tyminski led the charge for the Tigers as he shot an Even, 72. Tyminski is in a seven-way tie for eighth place and sits three strokes behind the tournament leader, Mick Wilkins of Morehead State.
Drew Owens followed with a 1-over, 73, while Scotty Hudson posted a 4-over, 76, and Jermey Fultz finished with a 6-over, 78. All four posted countable scores for TSU, just ahead of Rosario Falzone who shot an 11-over, 83.
Tyminski recorded a double bogey on the par-5, 1st, to quickly fall to 2-over. The sophomore moved to 1-over after seven holes by carding a birdie on No. 5 to go along with five pars. Tyminski moved to Even par after making three birdies and two bogeys over the next five holes. After losing a stroke on No. 15, Tyminski hit out of a fairway bunker on the par-5, 17th, from 145 yards to four feet to make birdie.
Owens carded three birdies on the day, earning his first on the par-4, 8th. The junior knocked his approach shot from 185 yards out to four feet of the flag setting up the birdie putt.
Hudson capped his day off with five birdies, putting all approach shots on those holes inside six feet. Fultz notched the first of his two birdies as he hit a 6-iron to 12 feet of the pin on the par-4, 3rd.
Falzone picked up birdies on No. 4 and No. 14 on Monday. The junior landed 10 feet from the hole from 124 yards out for his first birdie, while sinking a 15 foot putt for his second score cutter.
Inside the Numbers
- Tennessee State registered the most amount of birdies on day one with 17.
- Three teams recorded 14.
- John Tyminski and Scotty Hudson tied two other golfers with five birdies on the day to lead the field of 55 golfers.
- Tyminski and Hudson also fired 2-under on the Par-3's, which equaled three other golfers for the tournament low.
- Drew Owen shot Even on the Par-4's and Par 5's.
- The marks were the fourth best on Par-4's and third best on the Par-5's.
Up Next: The Tigers will continue play at the OVC Championship with round two on Tuesday. TSU will be a part of the second pairings to take the course and will be paired with Eastern Kentucky and Austin Peay.
