100 Moments: Dinwiddie Leads ?03-?04 Team to Victory
Tuesday, July 24, 2012

The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® series continues by reliving one of the most successful golf seasons in Tennessee State University history.

During the 2003-04 men's golf season, the Tigers took home four tournament titles and placed second in two more.

The team was led by Robert Dinwiddie who was selected to the All-OVC Team following the conference tournament during both seasons.

The Tigers finished the 2003 fall season strong, winning the Golf Coast Collegiate Classic and finishing second at the Birmingham Southern Tournament.

In the Golf Coast Classic, TSU finished the tournament with a 586, 10 strokes better than second-place Centenary.

The win was fueled by Dinwiddie who came into the tournament's final round in second place for the lowest scoring individual. He then proceeded to shoot a 69 on the final day, securing medalist honors as well as a win for Tennessee State.

The Tigers followed the win with a second place finish in Birmingham, Ala. Three TSU golfers placed inside of the top-ten, but a 291 in the tournament's opening round doomed any chances the team had for a victory.

Feeding off of the momentum of the tail end of the fall season, TSU won its first two tournaments of the 2004 spring season.

The first win came at Samford University by nine strokes, and the second was at the University of New Orleans Methodist Sportscare Intercollegiate.

The Tigers led after day one during both tournaments, and added to their leads on the final day.

On the second day at Samford, Dinwiddie shot an eight-under par, 64, to lead all players.

Unlike the team's previous wins, TSU needed every round for its next tournament victory, the Belmont Invitational. The team shot a 280 on the final day and a record-low 851 for the tournament.

Dinwiddie shot a 67 in the final round and finished as the tournament medalist with a five-under par, 208. Teammate Phillip Watkins also had a strong performance, finishing second with a three-under par, 211.

The 2004 season culminated with a second place finish at the Minority Championship and a NCAA Tournament bid for Dinwiddie.

The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® highlights some of the greatest moments in honor of Tennessee State's centennial celebration. A new moment will be released each weekday for a total of 100. These moments were chosen by the TSU 100 Moments committee, which consists of alums from various departments. TSU has so many great moments, not all can be represented in these 100.
