Nashville, Tenn. --- The Tennessee State University men and women's golf team will get the fall season under way when they head to Montgomery, Ala., to compete in the annual ASU Fall Golf Classic, hosted by Alabama State.
The event will take place at Lagoon Park Golf course. Named one of the nation's best Top 50 Public Courses by Golf Digest, Lagoon Park is a par-72, 6,773-yard course that will host 14 teams.
The pool of competition include men and women's squads from: Mobile (M,W), Prairie View A&M (M,W), Texas Southern (M), Arkansas Pine Bluff (M), Alabama State (M,W), Faulkner (M,W), Huntingdon (M), Alabama A&M (M), Springhill College (M,W), Southern (M), West Georgia (M), Savannah St (M,W), Shorter College (M), and Talladega College (M).
Both teams have hopes of opening the season in fine fashion. In last year's ASU Classic, the men took first shooting rounds of 289 and 291 for a total of 580 (+4) and the women finished in third place (364-369 733 +106).
Ryan Smith returns as one of TSU's top finishers in last year's event. He made par in the first round finishing with a seventh place tie, shooting 1-over 142 (72-73 143) overall. For the women, Jamie Pierce spotlighted the Tigers with a second-place finish overall shooting 13-over par (78-79 157) after ending round one tied for first.
Practice round is set to start Sunday with first round action slated to kick-off on Monday. The event is free and open to the public.
