Nashville, Tenn. - The Ohio Valley Conference has named Tennessee State University golfer, Ryan Smith, male golfer of the week.
Smith took first at the Alabama A&M Spring Classic (3/30) then finished second at home in the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate (4/6) making the all-tournament team for both events.
At the Alabama A&M Spring Classic, Smith survived a four-player playoff to capture his first collegiate tournament crown. He shot a birdie during the second playoff hole to secure the victory. Overall, Smith shot 76 (4-over-par) in the first round and followed in the second to finish the final round at 71 (1-under-par) for a total of 147 strokes.
The Tigers tallied their second tourney title on the season after shooting 25-over-par from total rounds of 304 and 297 for an overall score of 601.
At the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate, Smith started the last day of competition in fourteenth place but shot 5-under-par in the final round to close out the intercollegiate second overall. He finished 3-under-par at 207 from rounds of 73, 69, 65.
He helped rally the Tigers to finish out the tournament tied for second overall after starting the final day in eighth place. It was TSU's fifth top three finish this year.
On the season, Smith holds a 75.0 stroke average from 19 rounds shooting 3-over-par while registering even par or better on four occasions.
Smith receives his first career OVC weekly award.
Next, TSU Golf will compete at the 2010 OVC Golf Championship from April 26-28 at the Greystone Golf Course in Dickson, Tenn.
