Final round shooting lifts TSU to second-place finish in the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate

Springhill, Tenn. - After starting the final round in eighth place in the team standings, the Tennessee State University men's golf team shot their best round to finish second in the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate.

As a team, TSU shot 279 (1-under-par) in the final round to share the runner-up spot in the team standings with John A. Logan CC on Tuesday at the King's Creek Golf Course (par 70 - 6740 yardage).

The Tigers shot rounds of 288, 295, and 279 to finish 22-over-par.

OVC opponent, Murray State, won this year's tournament title leading after day one while holding on in the final round. The Racers shot the first round at 280 (par) and identical second and third rounds of 288 to finish at 856 (14-over-par).

The Tigers finished ahead of conference opponents Eastern Illinois (5th), Tennessee Tech (10th), Morehead State (11th) and UT Martin (12th).

Host, TSU, improves in their tournament after finishing eleventh last season at the Hermitage Golf Course. This is the Tigers' fifth top three finish overall this season.

Ryan Smith started the last day of competition in fourteenth place but shot 5-under-par in the final round to close out the intercollegiate second overall.  He finished 2-under-par at 207.

Smith made the all tournament team finishing in the top five while sitting behind the tourney's winner, SIU Edwardsville's Neal McCarty (70, 70, 64, - 204, 6-under-par).

Chris Seibel registered a top ten finish for the Tigers with a three-way tie for ninth. Seibel shot rounds of 67, 73, and 71 for a total of 211 (1-over-par).

Next, the men's golf team will head to Dickson, Tenn. to compete in the 2010 OVC Golf Championship. The tournament is scheduled for April 26-28 and will be held at the Greystone Golf Club.
