EASTOVER, La. --- Tennessee State holds a three-stroke lead after the opening round of the University of New Orleans Methodist Sportscare Intercollegiate being played in suburban New Orleans. The Tigers are aiming for their second tournament in victory in many outings this spring. TSU shot a 3-1 on Monday to hold a three-stroke lead over both UNO and fellow Ohio Valley Conference member Eastern Illinois in the 12-team field. Mark Searle shot a 71 to lead TSU and be the individual leader after the first round on the par-72, 7,002 Eastover-Gator Course. Other TSU scores were Jordan who had a 75 and stands in 16th place. Phillip Watkins shot a 77, Robert Dinwiddie 78, and Stu Michaels had an 80 in the opening round. Freshman newcomer Matt Buley competing as an individual, shot an 84. Following the second place teams were Missouri-Kansas City 305, Indian Hills 305, Southern Illinois 307, IUPUI 308, Nicholls State 309, Jackson State 311, Southeast Missouri 317, Alcorn State 318, and Siena 327. The second and final round in the 36-hole tournament will be played Tuesday. TSU opened its spring season earlier by winning the First Annual Samford Invitational in Alabama.
