MEN (6K) - 9 a.m. | WOMEN (5K) - 9:45 a.m.
STARTING LINE: The Tennessee State men’s and women’s cross country teams will officially open the 2017 season at the Golden Eagle Invitational in Cookeville, Tenn. on Saturday, Sept. 2. The men will run a 6K at 9 a.m. followed by the women’s 5K at 9:45 a.m.
TEAMS: Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech, Auburn, Mississippi State, Southern Illinois, Western Kentucky
WOMEN’S TEAM: The Tigerbelles feature five returners who competed last season for the cross country squad. Redshirt seniors Kayla Pryor (Ellenwood, Ga.) and Christian Pryor (Ellenwood, Ga.) headline the group of returners, which includes Alexia King (Atlanta, Ga.), Mikayla Banks (Houston, Texas) and Jasmir Spearman (Atlanta, Ga.).
MEN’S TEAM: Zyhir Baker-Elam (Philadelphia, Pa.), Deontae Henderson (Minneapolis, Minn.), Quintsontro Irby, Jr. (Memphis, Tenn.), Zebedee Lunsford (Anniston, Ala.), Jontue McDowell (Jacksonville, Fla.), and Jamario Scott (Cincinnati, Ohio) are all back from last year’s team with another year of experience. The Tigers will look to replace graduate Quamel Prince, who was TSU’s top finisher in all five meets a year ago.
SCHEDULE: The 2017 Ohio Valley Conference Championship is scheduled for Oct. 28 in Charleston, Ill. Leading up to the championship, the Tigerbelles and Flying Tigers will compete at the Golden Eagle Invitational (9/2), the Asics Embry-Riddle Classic (9/16), Austin Peay Cross Country Festival (9/23) and the Louisville Sports Commission Cross Country Classic (9/30).
PRESEASON POLL: Tennessee State was selected 12th in the Ohio Valley Conference Predicted Order of Finish for the men and women by the league’s coaches. Defending champion Eastern Kentucky was picked to repeat on the men’s and women’s sides.
UP NEXT: TSU will compete in the Asics Embry-Riddle Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla. on Sept. 16. The men will run an 8K followed by the women completing a 5K.
