OPENING TIP: The Tennessee State men’s basketball team returns to Gentry Center to host Morehead State, Thursday, Jan. 15. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
LEADING THE OVC: Big Blue ranks second in the Ohio Valley Conference in field goal percentage shooting 465-of-966 (.481). TSU ranks third in blocked shots per game, averaging 4.2. Shakem Johnson has made 67-of-99 shots, leading the league in field goal percentage, .677. Mark Freeman has dished out 68 assists to place the freshman third in assists per game, helping the Tigers to a third spot in the OVC rankings in assists per game. The Tigers also rank second in offensive rebounding percentage (33.5) and second in rebounding margin (+6.1).
ABOUT MOREHEAD STATE: The Eagles are 3-1 in OVC play led by Jordan Walker, who is just one-of-three to average double-digit scoring. MSU closed out its non-conference season 6-7 after taking on tough opponents in Missouri, Butler and Illinois State. To kick off conference play, Morehead State dropped to Jacksonville State to kick off league play before going on a three-game win streak against Tennessee Tech, EIU and SIU-Edwardsville.
ALL-TIME SERIES: Morehead State leads the all-time series against the Tigers, 36-39. Last season, TSU split the series with the Eagles 1-1, losing at home but winning in double overtime at the end of the season in Morehead, leaving Brian "Penny" Collins' record against MSU, 1-1.
LAST TIME OUT: Carlos Marshall, Jr.'s second half performance lifted the Tigers to its first Ohio Valley Conference road win Saturday afternoon, 75-73 over Southeast Missouri in the Show Me Center.
Down 44-36 at the half, Marshall scored nine points in the first four minutes of the second period. Michael Littlejohn, who led the Tigers in the first with 11 points, followed it up with eight points and three assists in the second, including his fifth three-pointer to give TSU its first lead of the second half with 2:28 left on the clock. With the help of SEMO's 9:30 scoring drought, where the Redhawks had just five points off of free throws, Marshall drove through the lane for a layup to win the game, 75-73.
The Tigers are now fourth in the league after Saturday games with a 11-6 overall, 3-1 OVC record.
NATIONALLY RANKED: The Tigers are ranked in the top 100 in the following categories:
- 17 in field goal percentage
- 42 in rebound margin
