OPENING TIP: The Tennessee State men’s basketball team kicks off the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational Thursday, Nov. 28 in the Orleans Arena as it takes on Cal Poly for a 1 p.m. CT tip. If the Tigers defeat the Mustangs Thursday, Big Blue will play either North Florida or LIU Friday, Nov. 29 at 3:30 p.m. If Cal Poly takes the Thursday contest, the Tigers will take the court for a 1 p.m. CT tip.
LEADING THE OVC: Shakem Johnson leads the Ohio Valley Conference in field goal percentage for the third week in-a-row, shooting .875. The team leads the conference in field goal percentage (51.0), and is runner-up in blocked shots per game (4.6) defensive rebounds (28.8), rebounding offense (39.6) and rebounding defense (31.8).
ABOUT CAL POLY: The Mustangs have two on roster averaging double-digit scoring - Junior Ballad, 11.8 and Tuukka Jaakkola, 10.3. Cal Poly also has a Boise State transfer in Malek Harwell averages 9.3 points per game after missing a few games due to injury. The graduate transfer knocked down 16 against Creighton.
ABOUT LIU: The Sharks are 1-5 entering the tournament with leaders Raiquan Clark averaging 20 points, 5.6 rebounds and Ty Flowers 14.5 points, 11.8 rebounds. LIU is off of a 96-66 loss to Texas Tech.
ABOUT NORTH FLORIDA: UNF is 4-3 after falling 76-67 to Creighton on Sunday. Sophomore forward Carter Hendrickson led the Ospreys with 19 points, 8 rebounds while senior forward Wajid Aminu worked for 17 points, 9 rebounds and three blocks. Five Ospreys average double-digit scoring.
ALL-TIME SERIES: This marks the first meeting between all programs.
LAST TIME OUT: Michael Littlejohn led the Tigers with 21 points as the team dropped its second game of the ten-day road swing to San Diego State in the Viejas Arena, 62-49.
TSU battled through a great first-half as the Aztecs drew its lead to as much as 11 before Big Blue went on a 13-0 run to take a two-point lead. Two foul calls sent San Diego State to the charity stripe for four free-throws, giving the team who shot 94 percent from the distance its opportunity to regain the lead before heading to the locker room, 25-23.
Littlejohn went 3-for-6 from three, 5-for-10 from the floor, to serve as a monumental offensive push for Tennessee State. San Diego State caught an offensive grove, finishing 11-for-26 from the field, utilizing its bench for 17 points in the second half laying the path to its sixth victory of the season.
