TSU Men's Basketball - 2019 OVC Media Day

Evansville, Ind. --- Tennessee State head coach Brian "Penny" Collins attended Ohio Valley Conference Media Day in preparation for the upcoming 2019-20 basketball season, where he had the opprotunity to highlight his program with various media members from the league as well as tape promos and interviews for the OVC office.

TSU was predicted to finish 9th in the 12-team race by the league coaches and sports information directors.

-On the new team
We’ve got a new group obviously, and I’m very excited about the direction they’re headed in right now. The guys are working really hard in practice and I’m excited about getting the season started.

-On some of the players who have impressed over preseason
We have some seniors that I’ve been really impressed with. Jy’lan Washington, who transferred from Louisiana Tech has been doing an unbelievable job, Wesley Harris a grad transfer from West Virginia has been bringing a lot of leadership and defensive tenacity that this team needs. We have a senior in Michael Littlejohn who’s coming back from last year and who gave us a lot of productive minutes on the other side of the ball, as well.

-On the team’s motto – Deserve to Win
Basically, what it all sums up to is, you have to be a good person. Treat people how you want to be treated, make sure you stick to deadlines, make sure you’re in class on time, make sure you pick up after yourself, pick up trash on campus and just take care of our university. And when you do those things, you put yourself in a position to Deserve to Win and that’s what our program stands for.

-On non-conference schedule
We have a very tough non-conference schedule. We’re playing teams from some of the top mid-major conferences in the country. We’re going to travel out to California to play San Diego State, as well as, Texas Tech who played in the NCAA Championship game. That schedule should prepare us for OVC play.

-On what TSU fans should expect game one
The main thing about game one is we need to get off to a good start. We need to show our fan base that we have a new team, and these guys are ready to go. We want to come out and play with an extreme level of confidence and urgency, and I think when TSU fans come to see us play, they’re going to see us play hard.
