OPENING TIP: The Tennessee State men’s basketball team heads to Memphis, for a matchup between Penny Collins and Penny Hardaway, Dec. 22. TSU tips at 2 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT: Tennessee State had its lowest scoring game of the season in the 60-82 loss at Akron, Dec. 18. It also served as the first 20+ point game loss for TSU. A rough shooting night for the Tigers resulted in redshirt junior guard Donte Fitzpatrick-Dorsey registering the only double-digit score of the night with 11 points, adding a team-high eight rebounds. A season-high 19 turnovers allowed Akron to capitalize and score 24 points off of TSU’s turnovers.

ALL-TIME SERIES: This serves as the ninth meeting between the Tigers of Tennessee State and Memphis. In the all-time series against Memphis, TSU is 0-8.

In the last matchup between the Tigers, Memphis #21 (AP) defeated TSU 91-86, Jan. 2 2011, under former head coach John Cooper (2009-2012). Kenny Moore tied a career-high, 22 points, hitting 7-of-11 from the floor, while helping the Tigers shoot 50 percent (12-of-24) from behind the arc, nailing 5-of-6 of his own. Robert Covington followed, hitting 7-of-12 overall, to finish with 16 points. The game was tied at the half, 43-43. TSU built their largest lead, 69-61 in the second before Memphis answered with its own 87-86 lead ending the night with a missed game tying shot from TSU.

TSU and Memphis met every season from 1984-1990, before having an eleven year pause in the series.

NATIONALLY RANKED: The Tigers are ranked top 50 in the nation in two categories:

  • 39 in turnovers forced
  • 42 in steals per game

RETURNING HOME: Memphis-native Donte Fitzpatrick-Dorsey is returning home for his first game in the FedEx Forum - a place he’d grown up in. The redshirt junior transfer from Ole Miss has numerous connections to the Memphis Tigers. Head Coach Penny Hardaway coached him as a young AAU player, and Assistant Tony Madlock recruited Fitzpatrick-Dorsey while at Ole Miss. He also grew up playing with guards Tyler Harris and Alex Lomax. Assistant Coach Jerry Nichols is also a Memphis native, and head coach Penny Collins was born in Memphis, moving to Nashville when he was 11-years-old.

UP NEXT: The Tigers continue their three-game road swing at Vanderbilt, Dec. 29 at Memorial Gymnasium. Tip off on ESPN+ is at 12:30 p.m.
