OPENING TIP: The sixth-seeded Tennessee State men’s basketball team takes on seventh-seeded Eastern Illinois in the first round of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 8:30 p.m. at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind.

TSU’S PATH TO THE OVC CHAMPIONSHIP: The OVC Tournament is a single-elimination format with the top two seeds (Murray State and Belmont) receiving double byes to the semifinals. The next two seeds (Austin Peay and Jacksonville State) received single byes to the quarterfinals. TSU’s path to the championship game is as follows if the Tigers win on each day:

  • First Round – Wednesday, Feb. 28 - vs. #7 EIU – 8:30 p.m. – OVC Digital Network
  • Quarter Finals – Thursday, March 1 – vs. #3 Austin Peay – 8:30 p.m. – OVC Digital Network
  • Semifinals – Friday, March 2 – vs. #2 Belmont – 9 p.m. – ESPNU
  • Championship – Saturday, March 3 – vs. TBD – 7 p.m. – ESPN2

TOURNAMENT HISTORY: TSU has been a member of the Ohio Valley Conference for 31 seasons and is making its 28th OVC Tournament appearance. The Tigers are 12-25 all time in the OVC Tournament, winning the championship in 1993 and 1994. TSU is looking for its first win at the OVC Tournament since 2013.

ABOUT THE FIELD: TSU is 7-5 against teams that qualified for this year’s OVC Tournament. Of their seven possible opponents, the Tigers have at least one win this season over five of them – all except Tennessee Tech and Murray State.

SEEDED SIXTH: 2018 marks the seventh time TSU has been seeded sixth in the OVC Tournament (’88, ’90, ’99, ’01, ’08, ’09, ’18). The Tigers are 2-6 as the sixth seed, most notably beating third-seeded Morehead State and second-seeded Murray State before falling to top-seeded Austin Peay in the 2008 OVC Championship Game.

ALL-TIME SERIES VERSUS EIU: Tennessee State is 29-23 in the all-time series versus Eastern Illinois. The Tigers are 0-1 against the Panthers in OVC Tournament action, falling to second-seeded EIU by an 84-79 final score in the first round of the 1998 Tournament.

THIS SEASON VERSUS EIU: TSU defeated EIU in the two regular season meetings by a combined seven points. Christian Mekowulu averaged 18.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game in the first two matchups with the Panthers this season.
