OPENING TIP: Tennessee State men’s basketball hosts Eastern Illinois on Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Gentry Center. The men’s game, scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip, is the second part of a doubleheader that will begin shortly after the 5:30 p.m. women’s game. TSU will go for a season sweep of the Panthers after having earned a road win at EIU on Jan. 11.
LAST TIME OUT: TSU dominated SIUE, leading start-to-finish, in a convincing 85-57 win at the Gentry Center on Thursday night. Christian Mekowulu was a force with a game-high 25 points to go with nine rebounds. TSU held the Cougars to just 19 points in the first half and carried a 42-19 lead into halftime. The Tigers led by 15 or more points throughout the second half to cruise to victory. TSU limited SIUE to 38.8 percent from the floor, including 23.8 percent from 3-point range.
ABOUT EASTERN ILLINOIS: EIU is a game back of TSU in the OVC standings – currently tied for eighth with a 3-6 conference mark. Montell Goodwin, who leads EIU in scoring, ranks 13th in the OVC with 14.3 points per game. The Panthers are 2-10 away from home and are coming off an 81-59 loss at Belmont on Thursday night.
LAST TIME VERSUS EIU: Clutch plays down the stretch including a steal and layup by Delano Spencer in the final minute helped TSU earn a hard-fought 69-65 road win at EIU on Jan. 11. TSU drained four free throws in the final five seconds to seal the victory over the Panthers. The Tigers finished with five players scoring in double figures including 12 points apiece from Spencer, Kamar McKnight (all in the second half) and Darreon Reddick.
ALL-TIME SERIES: Tennessee State improved its record in the all-time series versus Eastern Illinois to 28-23 thanks to a road victory in Charleston, Ill. earlier this season. The last five meetings between the two sides have been decided by an average of 5.4 points per game
UP NEXT: The Tigers will travel to Kentucky for a pair of Ohio Valley Conference matchups. The road swing begins at Morehead State on Feb. 1 and concludes at Eastern Kentucky on Feb. 3. Both games will air on the OVC Digital Network and on the radio on 102.1 The Ville.
