OPENING TIP: The eighth-seeded Tennessee State men’s basketball team opens the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament with a first-round matchup with fifth-seeded Southeast Missouri on Wednesday night at Municipal Auditorium. Wednesday will mark the first-ever meeting between the two programs in OVC Tournament play.
OVC TOURNAMENT: Tennessee State is competing in the OVC Tournament for the 27th time in 30 years in the league. TSU, which won the OVC Tournament Championship in 1993 and 1994, is the eighth seed for the fifth time in school history. The Tigers are 12-24 all time in the OVC Tournament, including a 0-4 record as the No. 8 seed.
LAST TIME OUT: TSU fell by a 68-63 final score at Belmont on Feb. 25 in the regular season finale. Wayne Martin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the way with 20 points and six rebounds with Tahjere McCall (Philadelphia, Pa.) adding 12 points and seven assists. The 68 points were the second fewest for Belmont versus an OVC opponent this season.
ABOUT SOUTHEAST MISSOURI: The Redhawks are 14-17 overall including a 9-7 record versus OVC opponents this season. SEMO had won two in a row before falling to Austin Peay on the last day of the regular season. Antonius Cleveland leads SEMO with 17.0 points per game.
LAST TIME VERSUS SEMO: Tahjere McCall (Philadelphia, Pa.) put up 27 points, eight boards, four assists and three steals in TSU’s 65-62 home win over SEMO on Jan. 5. McCall hit a free throw with 5.6 seconds left then came up with a steal before SEMO could attempt a game-tying shot on its final possession. TSU shot 50 percent from the field and led for 36:47 on the night.
ALL-TIME SERIES: TSU is 25-19 in the all-time series versus the Redhawks. The Tigers have never played SEMO in the OVC Tournament.
UP NEXT: If TSU defeats Southeast Missouri, the Tigers will take on fourth-seeded Jacksonville State on Thursday, March 2, at 6:30 p.m. in the OVC Quarterfinals at Municipal Auditorium.
