OPENING TIP: In the home stretch of the regular season schedule, the Tennessee State men’s basketball team hosts Morehead State at 8 p.m. in a game on ESPNU. Thursday’s game will also be Academic Night where student-athletes with a 3.0 grade point average or better from the fall semester will be honored at halftime.
OVC PLAYOFF PICTURE: The Tigers enter Thursday in eighth place in the Ohio Valley Conference standings with three games to play. The top eight teams will qualify for the OVC Tournament in March.
ABOUT MOREHEAD STATE: Winners of four in a row, the Eagles have the second-most OVC wins with nine entering Thursday’s matchup. Three Morehead State players average double figures led by Xavier Moon’s 16.3 points per game.
LAST TIME OUT: TSU was handed a 63-57 road loss at Jacksonville State on Saturday. Wayne Martin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored a team-high 18 points with Armani Chaney (Chicago, Ill.) tallying 15 for the Tigers. TSU had a season-low four turnovers but shot 33.3 percent (18-of-54) from the field.
LAST TIME VERSUS MOREHEAD STATE: Wayne Martin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had a season-high 26 points in TSU’s 87-85 loss at Morehead State on Jan. 14. TSU trailed by nine points in the second half before tying the game at 85-85 on a three from Tahjere McCall (Philadelphia, Pa.) with 1:04 left. Treshaad Williams finished a layup with 3.7 seconds left for the Eagles for the win. A long-distance three from McCall at the buzzer nearly went in, bouncing off the rim and out.
ALL-TIME SERIES: Tennessee State’s all-time record versus Morehead State is 31-37. TSU won last year’s meeting at the Gentry Center by a 77-76 final score.
UP NEXT: TSU hosts Eastern Kentucky on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Gentry Center. The game will be the second game of a basketball doubleheader and serve as Senior Night for TSU.
