OPENING TIP: TSU earned its fifth Division I postseason tournament berth and will host Ball State in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament on Tuesday night at the Gentry Center. At the D-1 level, the Tigers have made two NCAA Tournament appearances and two previous CIT appearances but are looking for their first win in a Division I postseason tournament.

THE CIT: The CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament is a single-elimination tournament that started in 2009. The 26-team field is made up of programs not selected to participate in the NCAA Tournament or the NIT. All games are played on campus sites. The tournament does not have brackets as opponents are paired after each round.

TSU AND THE CIT: TSU is making its third appearance in the CIT. In the program’s first experience in 2012, the Tigers fell at Mercer in the first round. The following year, TSU suffered an opening-round road loss at Evansville.

ABOUT BALL STATE: Ball State enters the CIT with a 19-13 overall record under the direction of former Arizona assistant James Whitford, who is in his third season as head coach in Muncie, Ind. Hailing from the Mid-American Conference, the Cardinals earned the sixth seed in the MAC Tournament before falling to Miami (Ohio) in the opening round. The Ball State offense features three players averaging double figures including Franko House and his 12.5 points per game.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. BALL STATE: Tennessee State has gone 2-0 versus Ball State in the all-time series. The Tigers defeated the Cardinals by a 70-69 final score on Feb. 18, 2006 in Muncie, Ind. In the second meeting at the Gentry Center on Dec. 22, 2006, TSU pulled off a 67-60 victory.

RECORDS ON THE LINE: A win over Ball State would help TSU set a school record for wins in a season at the Division I level with 21. It would also set the record for home wins in a season (12) at the Gentry Center, which opened prior to the 1980-81 season.

UP NEXT: A win could catapult the Tigers into the second round of the CIT, which is scheduled for March 18-20. Location, opponent and time of the game will be determined at a later date.
