OPENING TIP: The Tigers host Morehead State on Saturday at the Gentry Center as the second half of a basketball doubleheader. The game will be the "Greek Night" celebration.
LAST TIME OUT: TSU was handed a 97-81 home loss by Eastern Kentucky at the Gentry Center on Thursday night. For the Tigers, it was only their second home loss of the season and first since a 69-66 loss to Middle Tennessee on Nov. 21. Keron DeShields scored a team-high 21 points in the loss.
Tahjere McCall netted 17 points, Marcus Roper added 16, Darreon Reddick scored 11 and Wayne Martin went for 10. TSU held a 33-32 rebounding edge over the Colonels, which shot 64.0 percent (32-for-50) from the field. The Tigers forced the Colonels into 20 turnovers on the night.
ABOUT MOREHEAD STATE: Selected second in the OVC East Division in the preseason polls, Morehead State is 12-10 overall and 6-4 in OVC play. The Eagles had won two in a row before suffering a 73-67 loss at first-place Belmont on Thursday.
Corban Collins and Xavier Moon are Morehead State’s top two leading scorers, putting up 12.5 and 10.1 points per game, respectively. The Eagles are one of the top defensive teams in the conference, allowing a league-low 67.0 points per game. MSU also leads the league with a plus-4.7 rebounding margin on the season.
LAST SEASON VS. MOREHEAD STATE: Morehead State won both meetings between the two sides a year ago by scores of 72-57 on Feb. 5 in Morehead and 86-70 on Feb. 23 in Nashville. In the first meeting, Christian Mekowulu scored a game-high 20 points off the bench for TSU, but the Eagles shot 52.8 percent from the field.
In the return trip to Nashville, Morehead State sprinted out to a 54-38 halftime lead and never looked back in an 86-70 victory. Xavier Richards scored a career-high 23 points in the second meeting. Richards led TSU by averaging 18.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game in the two matchups.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. MOREHEAD STATE: TSU holds a 28-35 record in the all-time series versus Morehead State. TSU is looking to pick up its first win over the Eagles since Feb. 27, 2014. The Tigers’ last home win over Morehead State came on Jan. 11, 2012.
DESHIELDS' COUNTDOWN TO 1,000: Keron DeShields is closing in on 1,000 career points, currently sitting at 980 total points. DeShields scored 604 points from 2011-14 while playing at Montana and has 376 points for TSU this season.
