OPENING TIP: Following five games on the road, the Tigers return to Nashville for three games beginning with a 7:30 p.m. game versus SIU Edwardsville on Saturday, Dec. 9. TSU has won two in a row to begin Ohio Valley Conference play and is 4-1 at home on the season.
LAST TIME OUT: Tahjere McCall hit six free throws in the final 30 seconds and finished with a team-high 24 points to lead TSU to a 66-61 road victory over Eastern Illinois in Ohio Valley Conference action on Wednesday night at Lantz Arena. TSU (11-4, 2-0 OVC) dominated in the early going and had a 17-point lead in the first half before Eastern Illinois (4-11, 1-2 OVC) stormed all the way back, forcing the Tigers to win the game at the free throw line down the stretch. For the fifth time this season, TSU held an opponent to fewer than 25 points in the first half.
ABOUT SIU EDWARDSVILLE: First-year Head Coach Jon Harris has his Cougars off to a 3-12 start with losses in their last five. SIUE’s wins have been against Arkansas State, Southern Illinois and Portland State. Facing a difficult non-conference schedule, the Cougars fell to the likes of Saint Louis, Butler, Northwestern and Southern California. Five SIUE players are scoring 8.9 points per game or more led by Burak Eslik’s 12.1 points per game.
LAST SEASON VS. SIUE: In last season’s defensive battle in Edwardsville, TSU was handed a 45-38 road loss. The Tigers limited the Cougars to just 15 first-half points and held a 21-15 lead through 20 minutes. In the second half, however, SIUE outscored TSU by a 30-17 margin. For the Tigers, Christian Mekowulu secured a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Darreon Reddick finished with 11 points and eight rebounds. Rozell Nunn was the lone Cougar to reach double figures with 10 points.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. SIUE: Tennessee State holds a 3-1 record in the all-time series versus SIU Edwardsville. The Tigers won the first three meetings in the series, which dates back to Jan. 14, 2012. TSU’s first loss to SIU Edwardsville occurred last season.
LAST TIME SIUE PLAYED AT TSU: Last time TSU and SIUE played at the Gentry Center was Feb. 20, 2014 in a 66-61 Tennessee State victory. Both teams have different head coaches than at the time of the last meeting in Nashville.
OVC PRESEASON POLL: TSU was selected to finish sixth in the East Division of the OVC Media Poll as well as the OVC Coaches/SID poll. In the West Division, SIUE was picked sixth.
