BRENTWOOD, Tenn. - Tennessee State men's basketball forward Wayne Martin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) earned Ohio Valley Conference Co-Newcomer of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday. It is the second honor for Martin this season after taking home OVC Newcomer of the Week on Nov. 16.
The 6-7 forward averaged 14.3 points and 12.0 rebounds per game as he helped Tennessee State (9-2) post a 3-0 record during the week.
Martin began the week by putting up his sixth double-double of the season with 23 points and 17 rebounds to go with five blocks in TSU's 93-90 overtime win at Stetson on Dec. 14. Three days later, he tallied nine points and 16 boards, including eight on the offensive glass, in an 89-86 win over Lipscomb. Helping TSU complete the week undefeated, the redshirt junior finished with 11 points and a season-best three assists in an 81-76 victory against Alcorn State.
Riding a seven-game winning streak, the Tigers are 9-2 through 11 games, which is their best start since the 1994-95 season.
Martin and the Tigers return to action to face Illinois State on the road on Tuesday, Dec. 22, at 6 p.m. on ESPN3.
