OPENING TIP: The Tennessee State men’s basketball team has won six games in a row and will look for its seventh-consecutive win on Saturday versus Alcorn State in Memphis, Tenn. at the HBCU Heritage Hardwood Classic. TSU’s last seven-game winning streak came during the 2012-13 season. The Tigers also won nine in a row in 2011-12.

LAST TIME OUT: Tahjere McCall scored a career-high 31 points, including 25 in the second half, to lift TSU to an 89-86 victory over crosstown foe Lipscomb on Thursday night. The Tigers overcame a 14-point first-half deficit to earn their sixth-consecutive win. TSU was down by 10 at halftime and trailed for most of the second half until McCall’s three with 1:33 left put the Tigers up for good at 82-80.

The home side would hold on down the stretch and knocked down five free throws in the final 1:17 in the victory over the Bisons. Offensively, Keron DeShields and Marcus Roper scored 16 points apiece, and Wayne Martin added nine points and a game-high 16 rebounds for the Tigers.

ABOUT ALCORN STATE: Alcorn State is 1-7 on the season and is coming off a 68-60 victory over Blue Mountain on Dec. 14 in the Braves’ home opener. The Braves feature balanced scoring with five players averaging 7.0 points per game or more. Marquis Vance leads Alcorn State with 10.0 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. All seven of Alcorn State’s losses have been away from home.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. ALCORN STATE: TSU holds an 8-3 lead over Alcorn State in the all-time series, which dates back to the 1949-50 season. The Tigers won the first six meetings before the Braves’ first win in the series in 1961-62. The last time the two teams met was during the 1991-92 season when the Braves earned an 84-74 win. Tim Horton (14.7 ppg) was the Tigers’ leading scorer in 1991-92, which was a year before future NBA player Carlos Rogers suited up for TSU.

UP NEXT: On Tuesday, Dec. 22, the Tigers will take on Head Coach Dana Ford’s alma mater, Illinois State, in Normal, Ill. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
