Brentwood, Tenn. – Tennessee State men’s basketball forward Wayne Martin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was honored for his 27-point, 21-rebound effort versus Loyola by earning Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, it was announced by the conference office on Monday.
Martin is the first TSU players to win OVC Newcomer of the Week since Kellen Thornton on Feb. 20, 2012.
Appearing in his first game for Tennessee State, Martin carried the Tigers to an 86-71 victory on Nov. 13. The 27 points and 21 rebounds were both career highs for the Brooklyn native, who played one season at St. Francis Brooklyn and one at Navarro College before making his way to Nashville.
It was the first 20/20 game in the OVC since Kenneth Faried had three of them in the 2010-11 season. It is also one of just three 20-rebounds performances by an OVC player in the last four seasons.
TSU is in action tonight for a 7 p.m. ET (6 p.m. CT) road game at Ohio University.
