OPENING TIP: Year two of the Dana Ford era at Tennessee State University kicks off with a road test at Loyola in Baltimore, Md. on Friday, Nov. 13. The Tigers have won their last two season openers, defeating Lemonye-Owen, 69-68, in 2013-14 and Reinhardt, 97-66, in 2014-15.

ABOUT LOYOLA: Selected seventh in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, Loyola is coming off an 11-19 record in 2014-15. The Greyhounds, led by third-year Head Coach G.G. Smith, return four starters from last year’s team. The squad’s three leading scorers, Eric Laster (10.9 ppg), Tyler Hubbard (10.8 ppg) and Andre Walker (10.2 ppg), are all back after averaging double figures a year ago. Loyola defeated McGill, 72-48, in an exhibition game on Nov. 5.

ALL-TIME SERIES: Tennessee State has gone 0-3 versus Loyola in the all-time series, which began during the 2006-07 season. The three games have been decided by a combined seven points. Last time the two teams squared off was Feb. 23, 2013 in Nashville when the Greyhounds scored a 69-67 win. Five TSU players scored in double figures including current Philadelphia 76er Robert Covington, who netted 10 points.

LAST TIME OUT: Keron DeShields (Baltimore, Md.) scored a game-high 21 points and Wayne Martin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds to boost Tennessee State to a 66-61 victory over Cal State East Bay in an exhibition game in Nashville on Nov. 7. TSU held a 34-32 rebounding advantage and scored 29 points in the paint to the Pioneers’ 18.

CHARM CITY CONNECTIONS: TSU has two players with Baltimore connections. Baltimore native Keron DeShields played two years at Towson Catholic and moved on to St. Vincent Pallotti in Laurel, Md. when Towson Catholic closed. Senior Xavier Richards (St. Thomas, USVI) played his senior season at Gwynn Park High School and spent two seasons at Baltimore City Community College before transferring to TSU.

THE RETURNERS: Coming off a 5-26 season a year ago, TSU brings back five players who saw minutes in 2014-15. Among the returners from last year's team are four of the five top scorers as well as the two leading rebounders. Senior Marcus Roper (Walton Beach, Fla.) was TSU’s second-leading scorer last year with 10.0 points per game. Fellow senior Demontez Loman (South Port, N.C.) led the squad with 5.7 rebounds per contest.

PRESEASON POLL: Tennessee State was selected to finish sixth in the East Division of the OVC Preseason Coaches/SID poll, as well as the media poll. Defending champion Belmont was picked to win the overall OVC Championship as well as the East Division, while Murray State was chosen to win the West Division.

UP NEXT: The Tigers remain on the road as they travel to Ohio University for a Nov. 16 game.
