NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Although Thornton’s Big Blue career ended in March, the 6-8 forward will get a chance to continue his playing career.
On Friday the former Tiger basketball star was selected in the second round of the NBDL draft. The Idaho Stampede selected the Chicago, Ill. native with the 27th overall selection.
The Stampede, an affiliate of the Portland Trailblazers, finished just outside of play-off contention a year ago with a 19-31 record.
The former Big Blue star hopes to join the long list of NBDL’s list of players to make it to the NBA, a list that includes current NBA Players Jeremy Lin, Chris “Birdman” Anderson and Jose Juan Barea.
Idaho has had success as a team sending players to the world’s top league with Rafer Alston, Sundiata Gaines and Patrick Mills having suited up for the Stampede in years past.
Thornton and the Stampede will begin the season later this month, with the first game scheduled for Nov. 21.
