Men's Basketball Seeks Win in First Home Contest

Nashville, Tenn. – The Tennessee State men’s basketball team will come home for the first time this season to play host to Fisk on Monday.

The Tigers return to Nashville after winning one of three games in Atlanta during the Coaches Versus Cancer Classic hosted by Georgia State.

TSU (1-5) started the week strong, beating South Alabama, 68-57 for the team’s first win of the season. The Tigers then dropped their second game to Georgia State on an unbelievable buzzer-beater before falling to Monmouth in the finale, 70-81.

Senior Kellen Thornton was a force for the Tigers all week, averaging 14 points per game while hauling in 29 rebounds. Thornton really shined against Monmouth and had a career-high 27 points and 16 boards against the Hawks.

The team also got stellar play from junior Patrick Miller who tallied 13.7 points per contest and 19 assists. Miller was also one of TSU’s most versatile players on the week, as he recorded eight steals and 13 rebounds.

During the classic, the Tigers outrebounded their opponents 129-82. TSU’s dominance on the glass was a total team effort as six players averaged at least 4 rebounds in each game.

Tennessee State’s solid week moved the squad into first place in the Ohio Valley Conference in rebounding margin. Big Blue now has 36 more rebounds (241-205) than its opponents through six contests.

The team will try to build some momentum on Monday night after playing every game so far this season on the road.

TSU’s opponent, Fisk, comes into the game sporting a 1-3 record, having lost its last two contests by a combined 17 points.

The Bulldogs’ are led by junior forward Darrell Miller who leads the team in both points and rebounds with 49 and 23, respectively.

Miller has good size at six-foot-seven, but he stands as Fisk’s tallest player. This could bode well for Thornton and the rest of the Tiger front-line, as TSU boasts five players who are taller than any member of the Fisk unit.

Tennessee State will look to improve its conference-leading rebounding margin against Fisk on Monday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m.
