100 Moments: Coach Ed Martin's Legacy Lives On

The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® series continues by recognizing one of the most successful men's basketball coaches in Tennessee State University history.

Peruse the TSU men's basketball record book and you are sure to find Ed Martin's name all over it. Martin was the head coach of the men's basketball program for 17 years from 1968 until 1985. During that time, he amassed 290 wins and won 63 percent of the games he coached. His 290 wins are the most in school history.

In 1972-73, Martin the Tigers finished the regular season as the top ranked Associated Press National College Division team following a season in which TSU won over 20 games. That season, the Tigers scored more than 100 points four times and notched the school's 600th all-time victory with a win against Northern Kentucky State.

During his time at TSU, Martin's teams set multiple school records. His 1971-72 team broke the record for the highest shooting percentage and rebounds in a season. Both records still stand today.

Martin also helped get players such as Monti Davis, Ted McClain, Leonard Robinson, Mike Milligan and Lloyd Neal reach the pinnacle of basketball and get drafted by the NBA.

Prior to coaching at TSU, Martin coached at South Carolina State. He finished his coaching career with 508 wins. Coach Martin was inducted into the TSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1984.

A respected man throughout the entire Nashville community, Martin contributed to Vanderbilt University as a leader in the school's Human and Organizational Development program.

Following his coaching career, Martin was named Associated Professor of Human Development at Peabody College in 1989. He passed away in 2005 at the age of 75 and is still remembered as one of the Tiger's most successful coaches both on and off the court.

The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® highlights some of the greatest moments in honor of Tennessee State's centennial celebration. A new moment will be released each weekday for a total of 100. These moments were chosen by the TSU 100 Moments committee, which consists of alums from various departments. TSU has so many great moments, not all can be represented in these 100.
