Alex Bates Joins Tennessee State Men's Basketball

Nashville, Tenn. - Tennessee State University head men's basketball coach Travis Williams announced the addition of Northeastern University transfer Alex Bates on Tuesday.

Bates, a native of Greenbelt, Md., spent two seasons with the Huskies in Boston. In 2011-12, the forward made seven appearances. He earned his first career start against Towson on Jan. 2.

During his freshman campaign, Bates saw action in 23 games. He grabbed a career-high five rebounds, scored two points and blocked a shot in his collegiate debut against Utah State. He later matched season-highs in points (four) against Drexel and Furman.

"We are very excited to add Alex to our program both academically and athletically," said Williams. "I am expecting him to fit in well with his athleticism, size and ability to run the floor. He will help our front court players get better in daily practices and game preparation.  He is a hard worker and we expect him to make a strong contribution to our program."

Before arriving at NU, Bates played basketball for Eleanor Roosevelt High School. He helped the team to a regional title and an appearance in the state semifinals in 2010. He was also named a McDonalds All-America nominee.

Bates will sit out the 2012-13 season due to NCAA transfer rules.
