The Tennessee State University men's basketball team opens the 2011-12 season with an exhibition against Nashville-foe Trevecca Nazarene University on Tuesday, Nov. 1. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. inside the Gentry Center.
TSU was predicted to finish fourth in the Ohio Valley Conference as voted on by the league's head coaches and sports information directors.
Head Coach John Cooper's squad returns all five starters that posted 10 victories in the OVC last season.
Among those returning includes two preseason All-OVC selections in Robert Covington and Kenny Moore. Covington, averaged 13.4 points per game and was third in the league with an average of 7.5 rebounds each contest. The Bellwood, Ill., product led the Tigers in field goal percentage (.500) and three-point field goal percentage (.460), while picking up 1.5 steals per game.
Moore averaged a team-high 14.6 points a game with 6.9 rebounds per contest. He reached double-figures in 23 contests and notched five double-doubles last season.
Also returning is 2010-11 OVC Freshman of the Year, Patrick Miller. The Chicago, Ill., product was third on the team posting 11.4 points per game, while dishing out 89 assists.
Nashville native Wil Peters returns for his senior campaign, after collecting a team-best 125 assists and tallying an average of 10.5 points per game. Forward Michael Green returns for his sophomore season. The Columbia, S.C., native put together an average of 4.3 points and 4.1 rebounds in 30 games played last season.
TSU will have four student-athletes eligible for the first time this season. Three of those are transfers: Muniru Bawa (Indiana), Jordan Cyphers (Utah) and Kellen Thornton (Illinois State). Freshman M.J. Rhett will also play after redshirting last season.
The Tigers also have three true freshmen: Kharon Butcher, Jay Harris and Taylor Ward.
Trevecca Nazarene posted an 11-18 record and was 5-11 in the TranSouth last season. Head Coach Sam Harris returns for his 19th season as the head coach for the Trojans with an overall record of 293-279.
TNU welcomes eight returning players, which includes seven upper classmen (five juniors and two seniors).
Last season, the Tigers defeated TNU 84-77 in an exhibition contest. Covington led all scorers with 20 points, while Miller added 19 for the Tigers. TNU senior Michael France led the Trojans with 19 points and nine rebounds.
Tickets for Tuesday's contest is $5, which also includes admission to the TSU women's basketball exhibition contest with LeMoyne-Owen.
Season tickets for the 2011-12 campaign is $80 for adults and children. A single men's game and double header ticket is $10 and a single women's game ticket is $8 for adults.
