The Tennessee State University men's basketball team opens the 2011 regular season at home with cross-town rival Fisk University on Wednesday, Nov. 16. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Gentry Center.
TSU (0-2) is coming off a tough 52-49 loss at Western Kentucky University on Monday evening. The Tigers led by three points with five minutes remaining, but WKU went on a 7-to-4 run down the final stretch to pull out the victory. Defensively, the Tigers forced 25 WKU turnovers and inked 25 points off turnovers.
Leading the way for the Tigers was junior forward Robert Covington. The Bellwood, Ill., product inked his 11th career double-double, posting 17 points and 14 boards in the game.
Wil Peters and Kellen Thornton followed with eight points each. Thornton tallied all eight points in the first half and was 4-of-7 from the field. Peters has connected on a team-high 55.6 percent (5-of-9) of his field goals this season.
Through two games, Covington leads TSU in scoring and rebounding: averaging 13.0 points and 6.0 rebounds.
Patrick Miller, a sophomore guard from Chicago, has a team-best five steals this season.
TSU and Fisk are meeting for the 15th time on Wednesday with TSU leading the all-time series, 11-3. Last season, the Tigers notched an 85-50 win over Fisk, recording their largest margin of victory over an opponent in 20 years. Four Tigers reached double figures as Kenny Moore led the team with 18 points.
The Bulldogs (0-3) are coming off an 89-65 loss at the University of Alabama at Huntsville on Monday. UAH held Fisk to 38 percent shooting (25-of-66) from the field.
Fisk is led by Darrell Miller who is averaging 21.6 points and 14.0 rebounds a game through three contests.
