Mercer compiled a record of 22-11 and a second place finish in the Atlantic Sun. The Bears lost two out of their last three games including a heartbreaking 62-58 loss to Florida Gulf Coast in the A-Sun semifinals.
In December, the Bears lost a close 83-78 contest to Big East foe Seton Hall in overtime. The common opponent for TSU and Mercer was Belmont. The Bruins knocked off the Bears twice (82-78 and 62-61). Tennessee State lost to BU, 75-62.
The two teams are meeting for the first time in school history. TSU holds a 110 ratings percentage index (RPI), while the Bears dial in at 133 in the latest NCAA rankings.
The CIT was established in 2009 and is a single-elimination tournament comprised of a 24-team field. All five rounds of the event are played at on-campus sites, determined by seeding.
