Nashville, Tenn. - The Tennessee State University Tigers will take their five-game win streak on the road when they head east on I-24 to face Middle Tennessee State.
The non-conference game is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 29, at 7 p.m. at the Murphy Center in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
The two teams will meet for the first time since 2006. TSU trails the all-time series, 32-16, with MTSU winning 15 of the last 18 games. In their last meeting, the Tigers dropped a 67-56 decision at MTSU on Dec. 4 2006. STATS...
The last time the Tigers recorded a win over the Blue Raiders was during the 2000-01 season, 75-71. It was the year following MTSU's departure from the Ohio Valley Conference after spending 48 years in the league. Since MTSU left the OVC, TSU holds a 1-4 record.
On the season, the Tigers have defeated both teams in which they currently hold losing records in the all-time series. They picked up OVC wins at home against Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky.
The Tigers (6-6) are on their longest winning streak under second-year head coach John Cooper after defeating EKU, 62-49, at home on Dec. 21. Robert Covington posted a double-double, his second of the year, with a season-high 22 points; with 15 coming in the first half. For the Tigers, four players average in double figures to fuel a balanced attack. Kenny Moore leads TSU in scoring and rebounding with 14.6 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Moore was named OVC Newcomer a week ago after the Tigers overtime win over Morehead State.
Wil Peters leads the team in all shooting categories while posting 11.5 ppg and a team best, 3.7 assists per game. Two-time OVC Freshman of the Week, Patrick Miller, is averaging 10.8 ppg and is leading the team in minutes played per game at 34.2.
MTSU (4-8) has dropped four consecutive games including a 72-53 loss to Vanderbilt at home in their last time on the court.
Leading scorers, Sun Belt Third Team preseason selection, James Washington (14.6 ppg), and Jason Jones (11.2 ppg), led the team in scoring against Vandy. Jones grabbed the team-high, 15 points, with Washington chipping in 10. JT Sulton, on the year, is the team's top rebounder with 5.0 rpg.
The Blue Raiders are 2-3 at home and posted their last win at SIU-Edwardsville, 73-64, on Dec. 4. At the start of the season, they were selected to finish fourth in the East Division of the Sun Belt preseason poll.
