Tennessee State University men's basketball junior forward, Josh Sain, was named Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week (11/30/09). Sain transfered in this season from Chipola CC.
Sain receives the weekly award for the first time this season. Sain averaged 15.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 2.0 steals/game in three contests last week as Tennessee State competed in the Chicago Invitational while picking up their first victory of the season.
A native of Jackson, Tenn., Sain's best performance came in a victory over Kennesaw State in Chicago, as he scored 23 points, grabbed six boards and had four steals in 27 minutes as the Tigers won 73-67 for the first-time under first-year head coach John Cooper.
He led the team in scoring with 12 points in a 84-53 loss to Iowa State to begin the week. He then added 11 points in the week's finale and 63-60 loss against Liberty in Chicago. For the week Sain shot 47.2 percent (17-of-36) from the field and 87.5 percent (7-of-8) from the free throw line.
The Tigers finish the Chicago Invitational Challenge winning one of four games played. Sain averaged 15 points per game during the tournament to lead the Big Blue.
Sain is currently leading the team in scoring with 14.2 points per game. He has also registered five of six games in double figure scoring, including a team high in four games. He is also averaging three boards, 1.3 assists, 1.7 steals while shooting 40 percent from the field, 41 percent from behind the arc and 71 percent from the charity stripe.
