Tigers Outscored in the Second Half
Martin, Tenn. - The Tennessee State University men's basketball team dropped their second straight, losing to UT Martin in conference play, 78-65, Saturday night inside the Elam Center.
TSU (5-11, 3-3 OVC) was outscored in the second half, 52-38, despite shooting 47 percent from the floor in the game.
Gerald Robinson, Jr. led the Tigers with 14 points and five assists. Darius Cox posted a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds while Jerrell Houston (8 rebounds) and Emanuel Gaiter added nine points each.
The Tigers led for much of the first half shooting 46 percent while holding UT Martin to 27 percent.
After leading at the break, 27-26, the Tigers fell behind early in the second half, 42-32, from a 12-0 Skyhawk run (14:51).
Lester Hudson led the Skyhawks with a game-high 30 points, 10 rebounds, eight steals and seven assists. Marquis Weddle scored 23 points shooting 8-of-16 from the field including 7-of-12 from beyond the arc and Olajide Hay added 15 points.
The Tigers crept within six points (56-50) with 6:49 remaining before UT Martin (9-6, 2-3 OVC) opened a 12-2 run to take their largest lead, 68-52 (4:19). TSU came within ten points shooting 48 percent in the second, but the Skyhawks' consistent outside shooting sealed the win. UT Martin finished with 42 percent shooting, 48 percent from three-point range including 55 percent from the field in the second.
Next, the Tigers will host the OVC defending champions, Austin Peay, at the Gentry Center, Jan. 17. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
