The Tennessee State Tigers (10-13, 7-7) took the battle to league-leading Austin Peay (15-9, 11-3) on their home court and nearly pulled an upset, losing 79-78 on a last second put-back basket with less than one second remaining in the game.
LaDarious Weaver paced the Tigers’ attack with a game-high 24 points hitting 8-of-12 three-pointers. Jerrell Houston added 15 points, Bruce Price chipped in 14 points and Darius Cox scored 10 points with a team-high seven rebounds.
Austin Peay got double figure scoring from Wes Channels (17), Kyle Duncan (16), Derek Wright (12) and Todd Babington. Fernandez Lockett garnered a game-high 12 rebounds, including the final winning put-back. He scored 8 points on the game.
Austin Peay opened the game on fire, building a sixteen point lead, 31-15 by the 7:15 mark of the first half. The Tigers, however, went on a 22-6 run to close within two points, 39-37, with 1:05 remaining in the half. APSU closed out the first half with a 44-40 lead.
In the second half, TSU moved to the lead (47-46) at the 17:03 mark, For the rest of the half the teams battled through seven ties and seven lead changes until the Tigers took a 77-74 lead with 2:11 remaining. APSU closed the score to 1-point (78-77) with 1:12 left and TSU missed two FTs with 0:11 remaining. On the ensuing possession, APSU had several shots at the basket and Lockett pushed back a missed shot with the clock running out for the win.
TSU shot 49% (29-59) from the field, 40% (10-25) from 3-point range and 53% (10-19) from the FT line. APSU shot 46% (23-50) from the floor, 44% (11-25) from beyond the 3-point arc, and 71% (22-31) from the charity stripe. APSU won the rebound battle 38-34.
