NIU To Observe a “Week Of Healing”

The Tennessee State University men’s basketball team will not play their scheduled O’Reily’s ESPNU BracketBuster game against Northern Illinois University on February 24, 2008 due to the tragic event on the DeKalb, Illinois school last Thursday, February 14, 2008. The game will not be rescheduled this season.

Northern Illinois issued the following statement on Saturday, February 16, 2008 --

Northern Illinois Athletics to Observe a Week of Healing
Huskies Will Return to Competition February 25


DeKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois Athletics will join with the rest of the Northern llinois University community in observing a week of healing in the wake of a shooting on the NIU campus which claimed the lives of five students last Thursday, Feb. 14.

As a result, Northern Illinois will not compete in any athletics events - either home or away - until Feb. 25, 2008. A total of 25 Huskie athletic competitions between Feb. 15 and Feb. 24 will be canceled or rescheduled ... Contests that will not be played on their scheduled dates include women's basketball games at Central Michigan (Feb. 19) and at Toledo (Feb. 23), men's basketball games at Toledo (Feb. 20) and home versus Tennessee State (Feb. 24).

“We certainly understand and respect their decision to cancel our contest.” said Teresa Phillips, Tennessee State University’s Director of Athletics. “There are times that athletics are secondary to such tragic events that occurred on the Northern Illinois campus. Our entire University sends our prayers to Northern Illinois University, its students and athletes.”
