TIGERS STUMBLE ON ROAD, FOR LOSS AT SAMFORD
Birmingham, AL -- Tennessee State's road woes continued as they dropped a 70-60 decision to Samford in Seibert Hall on Thursday night (02/01). TSU (10-13, 6-7 OVC), has a three-game losing skid, and a 2-10 worksheet in road games this season. The Tigers have now slipped to seventh in the OVC standings. Samford (13-10, 10-4 OVC) avenged an earlier loss to the Tigers ended a two-game skid and is in a tie for second in the Ohio Valley Conference Junior Andrae Belton led three Tigers in double figures, scoring 19 points, followed by Reiley Ervin (14) and Clarence Matthews (13). In the first half, the Tigers overcame an early 8-2 lead (16:16) and two five point leads (21-16 at 5:32) to take a 28-27 lead into the locker room at intermission. In the second half, TSU moved ahead by seven points (36-29) with 16:19 remaining. After a tie (44-44) at the 9:36 mark, the Tigers pushed ahead 50-44 after a Belton lay-up and free-throw with 8:20 remaining. Samford chipped away at the Tigers lead to move ahead 53-52 at 4:30, but a Belton jumper at 3:56 pushed TSU back ahead 54-53 at the 3:56 mark. From there, Samford went on a 10-0 run to forge ahead 63-54 with 1:48 left in the game. TSU was never able to recover and the final margin ended at 10 points 70-60. The Tigers won the battle of the boards 27-25, but shot 47.9% (23-48) from the floor, 69.2% (9-13) from the foul line and 38.5% (5-13) from beyond the arc. Samford shot 50% (22-44) from the floor, 80% (20-25) from the foul line and 33.3% (6-18) from three-point range. Tennessee State will return to action at home on Saturday (02/03) against league-leading Austin Peay State for Kid's Night. Game time is set for 7:30p.
