TIGERS MATTHEWS NAMED OVC NEWCOMEROF THE WEEK FOR HIS PLAY IN THREE GAMES

NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State junior basketball player Clarence Matthews has received his fourth weekly honor for the Ohio Valley Conference this season as he has been named OVC Newcomer of the Week for his performance in three games this past week. Matthews, 6-7, 250-pound player for Beaumont, Texas, turned in one of the OVC's top single game performances with an 18-point, 19-rebound performance to open the week against Austin Peay in a 25-point win. Matthews also had five blocked shots in the game. He followed the Austin Peay game with another double-double against OVC regular season champion Murray State with 11 points and 13 rebounds. In Saturday's bracket buster win over Mid-American Conference Ball State, Matthews had 15 points, seven rebounds, and three blocked shots. Matthews had 10 blocked shots for the week and improved upon his league-leading field goal shooting percent and rebound average. Matthews has been OVC Newcomer of the Week three times this season and was OVC Player of the Week on Jan. 23.
