SAMFORD HEATS UP IN SECOND HALF TO PULL AWAY FROM TSU

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Tennessee State saw Samford pull away from a one-point halftime lead to shoot 65 percent in the second half on the way to claiming a 68-48 Ohio Valley Conference win Thursday night. The Tigers were outscored 40-21 in the final half as Samford kept on pace for the lead in the OVC. TSU falls to 4-8 and 3-3 while Samford is 10-4 and 6-1. TSU shot 40 percent (19-of-48) from the floor. Samford finished the game at 56 percent (25-45) the best shooting percentage in a game by a TSU opponent this season. Kareem Grant led TSU with 17 points while Clarence Matthews scored 15. The other TSU starters, Larry Turner, Reiley Ervin, and the team's leading scorer, Wayne Arnold all managed a single field goal. Samford was led by Randall Gulina who scored a career-high 21 points. J. Robert Merritt scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half. TSU continues its Alabama road swing Saturday at Jacksonville State.
