Ahmaad Smith

Smith, a former Tiger standout, returned to Tennessee State in the spring of 2018 to take over the coaching duties of the cornerback corps. Smith comes back to TSU after a five-year professional playing career and six years of coaching experience.

Under his tutelage, Dajour Nesbeth earned First Team All-Ohio Valley Conference selections. Nesbeth led the team with 58 tackles, 42 solos, four interceptions and seven pass breakups. The cornerback tallied 2.5 tackles for loss on the season.

Smith joined the Tigers staff after three seasons as the defensive backs coach at Catawba College, as well as an assistant academic coordinator and assistant special team coordinator. During his tenure with CC, Smith produced two All-South Atlantic Conference and Super Region defensive backs in Case Woodard and Christophe Page. Woodard would also be name to the 2016 All-American 2nd team.

Prior to Catawba, Smith coached the defensive backs at Hampden-Sydney College from 2012-14. Smith’s unit was the top ranked defense in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, which produced five all-conference defensive backs, including All-American corner, Zach Morgan. Smith finished runner-up as the 2013 AFCA Division III Assistant Coach of the Year and was selected as a D2 All-Star Game defensive back coach in 2014.

Smith is a two-time recipient of the Bill Walsh Internship Program, spending time with the Tennessee Titans in 2015 and the Minnesota Vikings in 2017. He also completed an internship with the Calgary Stampede of the CFL in 2016, was a 2017 NFL and NCAA Coaching Academy Participant and a 2018 AFCA 35 Under-35 Coaches Leadership Institute Participant.

As a player, Smith spent time with the BC Lions and the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League. He played for several arena teams, including two seasons with the Iowa Barnstormers of the Arena Football League. Smith gained notoriety as a finalist in the Michael Irvin reality show ‘4th and Long’.

Smith graduated from Tennessee State in 2006 with a B.B.A. in Business Information Systems. He is also a certified personal trainer.
