NASHVILLE --- Members of Tennessee State’s 1999 Ohio Valley Conference Championship football team will serve as the honorees for the 2019 John Merritt Classic.
This season marks the 20th anniversary of TSU’s second OVC title.
Posting an 11-1 overall record including an undefeated 7-0 mark in OVC games, the 1999 team was guided by back-to-back OVC Coach of the Year L.C. Cole.
The Big Blue dominated in 1999, reeling off 11-straight wins on the way to the program’s second consecutive FCS playoff berth.TSU finished the year ranked No. 11 in the nation and had five all-americans on the squad.
Lamar Carter was named the OVC Defensive Player of the Year while two players went on to be drafted in the NFL.
The Tigers had five players selected to the 1999 All-OVC First Team in Michael Thompson (OT), Bennie Anderson (OG) Corey Sullivan (WR), Avion Black (RS) and Lamar Carter (DL). Ike Boone (C), Leon Murray (QB), Amariah Robb (RB), Avion Black (WR), Brent Sterling (LB), Ligarius Jennings (DB) and Ed Sanders (DB) earned All-OVC Second Team honors.
