NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee State defense was one of the top units in the nation just a few seasons ago. The Tigers finished sixth in total defense and seventh in scoring defense in 2013, while finishing 11th in total defense during the 2014 campaign. A year ago the defense ranked 68th in total defense and 81st in scoring defense.
Head coach Rod Reed made some changes in hopes to return the Tigers to one of the stronger defensive squads in 2017. Reed’s first move was to bring in Garry Fisher to take over as Defensive Coordinator. Fisher spent last year at Western Illinois and seven years at Ohio Valley Conference rival Eastern Kentucky, will also be in charge of the safeties.
Nick Davison is the lone returner of the defensive staff and will move inside to work with the interior line. Davison spent the last two seasons working with the ends, which included Ebo Ogundeko who is a two-time All-OVC selection, as well as an All-American.
Gerald Chatman joined the staff in the spring and will work with the defensive ends and outside linebackers. Chatman comes to TSU after spending 2016 as the defensive line coach at Elon.
Sidney Powell spent last year as the wide receivers coach for the Tigers, but will move over to coach the corner backs. Powell worked with the defensive backs for seven seasons at Tennessee Tech before coming to TSU.
