NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State football returned to the practice field after a day off to begin the second week of practice on Monday.
The Tigers went in full pads for the first time this season. TSU will continue in full pads through Thursday as they prepare for the first scrimmage, set for Saturday morning. The scrimmage will be the first of three before they take on Georgia State in the season opener in Atlanta on Aug. 31.

Redshirt-Freshman Tight End Aaron Cauthen
- On advantage of redshirting last season
“It helped me out a lot. I haven’t played football since my senior year of high school, so coming in and redshirting as well as learning from the older guys really helped me out in progressing as a player. I learned a lot from Larry Haralson and Rodney Morris last year, so hopefully this year will be real successful for me.”
- On the tight ends adding to a high powered offense
“Just bring a tight end presence. Usually we depend on our receivers, but now we have two big-bodied tight ends that run like receivers. So hopefully we can get a lot of touches and help the team out, especially in the middle of the field.”
Junior Defensive End LaRonzo Davis
- On the transition from Junior College
“It is a big transition coming from junior college. It is faster paced, but you just have to apply effort and hard work. I just have to conduct myself in a mature manner and set a good example for the underclassmen.”
- On picking up the system
“You really do not get to much time; you pretty much get going right away. We are midway through camp and the first game is in a matter of weeks. We just have to lock in at this point. It is all about applying the effort and work.
Redshirt-Junior Safety Laquarius Cook
- On the defense
“We still have some work to do and everybody has to get better knowing the system. Once everyone knows what to do then I feel like we will be pretty good.”
- On putting on the pads and full contact
“It feels good, but when you lay down at night you start to feel it a little bit. But that’s just football, we’ll get over it.”
- On the teams progression
“You can never be too good at everything. Just keep working and everything will take care of itself.”
Redshirt-Sophomore Running Back Tyler Black
- On getting back into practice
“It is great to be back in the pads. It has been a long time since we’ve been here. We are looking forward to a long season and working hard every day. Once we get everybody on the same page and we get rolling, we will be looking for the championship.”
- On summer workouts
“I have been in the playbook and working my tail off every day over the summer. I have been getting my running in, conditioning and trying to get stronger. I have gained about ten pounds. I feel like I have been coming along.”
