NASHVILLE --- Two Tigers were named to the 2016 HERO Sports FCS Freshman All-American Team, as announced on Wednesday. Steven Newbold and Chris Rowland earned a spot on the First Team as true-freshmen.
Newbold completed his inaugural campaign with 41 receptions for 784 yards and six touchdowns. The wide receiver finished 11th in the voting for the STATS FCS Jerry Rice Award for the best freshman in the nation. Newbold averaged 19.1 yards per reception, which ranked 14th nationally. The Carol City, Fla. native highlighted his season with a 26-yard game winning touchdown catch with less than two seconds on the clock at Austin Peay.
Rowland led the nation in Combined Return Yards with 1,103 yards in his rookie season. The Nolensville, Tenn. product set a Tennessee State single season record with 965 kickoff return yards. Rowland also served as a wide receiver and a running back, finishing 2016 with 1,396 all purpose yards.
