BRENTWOOD, Tenn. --- Ronald Butler has been named adidas Ohio Valley Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in a 41-40 victory at Austin Peay. The OVC honor is the seventh for Tennessee State this season, the second for an offensive player.
Butler led a six-play, 81-yard touchdown drive, with 65 seconds remaining on the clock to pull out the win for TSU. On the final offensive play for the Tigers, Butler eluded the pass rush, stepped up in the pocket and delivered a 21-yard strike to Steven Newbold in the corner of the endzone. The touchdown was the sixth for the quarterback on the day.
Butler threw for four scores and rushed for two in the Tigers first road win since 2014. The senior carried the ball 10 times for 130 yards and totaled 212 yards in the air on 12 completions in 23 attempts. Butler threw scoring passes of 20, 27, 39 and 21 yards. The signal caller scored on runs of 13 and 84 yards. His second rushing touchdown was the longest run in his career and the 15th longest in the NCAA this season. The jaunt was three yards shy of the longest run in the OVC this season.
The Tallahassee, Fla. native continues to move up in the TSU record book. Butler has entered the Top 10 in three career categories, Passing Attempts (8), Passing Touchdowns (8) and Pass Completions (10).
The Tigers will return home for Senior Day as they host Tennessee Tech on Nov. 12. The game is the last in the Sgt. York Trophy series for 2016.
