BRENTWOOD, Tenn. --- Patrick Smith has been named adidas Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in a 35-17 loss at Vanderbilt. The OVC honor is the sixth for Tennessee State this season, the first for an offensive player.
This is the second time he has won the award. Smith earned the honor after his record day versus Murray State (11/8) a year ago.
Smith went for 170 yards on seven receptions, averaging 24.3 yards per catch, and two touchdowns against the crosstown SEC opponent.
Smith received a pass from Ronald Butler on the second play of the game for his first score of the night. Butler hit Smith in stride at the TSU 38 yard line and proceeded to out run the Commodore defense to the end zone. The scoring play totaled 93 yards, tying for the second longest pass play in the FCS this season and became the longest in the Ohio Valley Conference in 2016.
The play also tied for the second longest in school history, matching a Joe Gilliam, Jr. to Joe Sweet connection on Nov. 22, 1969.
The top pass play in TSU history is a 99-yarder from Riley Walker to Fred Burnette at Jacksonville State on Oct. 6, 2004.
Smith and Butler teamed up for the, now, seventh longest toss in school history as they hooked up for an 84 scoring pass last year at Jacksonville State (9/19/15).
The redshirt-junior hauled in his second touchdown of the game on a two-yard reception giving the Tigers a 14-7 lead in the first quarter.
The two touchdowns give the Memphis, Tenn., product eight on the season and 18 in his second year of play.
The Tigers will return to Ohio Valley Conference play with a road trip to face Murray State on Oct. 29.
