BRENTWOOD, Tenn. --- Tennessee State freshman wide receiver Steven Newbold (Carol City, Fla.) earned Ohio Valley Conference Co-Newcomer of the Week for his standout performance versus No. 19 Eastern Illinois, it was announced today by the OVC office.
For Newbold, who leads the OVC and ranks third in the nation with 24.1 yards per reception, it is the first weekly honor of his young career.
In the matchup with nationally-ranked EIU on Saturday, Newbold registered four catches for a career-high 121 yards. His performance was highlighted by a 44-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter that gave TSU a 34-28 lead.
Through five games, Newbold has compiled 19 catches for a team-best 458 yards and three touchdowns.
The award marks the fourth time a TSU player has been honored by the OVC this season. Ebenezer Ogundeko won OVC Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 11, Earl Harrison was named OVC Co-Newcomer of the Week on Sept. 18 and Lane Clark picked up OVC Specialist of the Week on Oct. 2.
