NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee State football team placed four student-athletes on the All-Ohio Valley Conference Teams Tuesday.
Redshirt-sophomore defensive end Ebenezer Ogundeko was named first-team, redshirt-sophomore wide receiver Patrick Smith and redshirt-junior guard Jessamen Dunker were named to the second team, while redshirt-freshman O’Shay Ackerman-Carter joined Ogundeko and Smith on the All-Newcomer Team.
Ogundeko played in nine games this season registering 52 tackles, 31 solos, and had 10 tackles-for-loss totaling in 52 yards. The transfer from Clemson led the Tigers with five sacks, ranking seventh in the OVC with .56 per game. Ogundeko was named as OVC Defensive Player of the Week on Nov. 8 for his performance against Murray State.
Smith had a breakout season finishing four yards shy of 1,000. The Memphis, Tenn. native scored 10 touchdowns as he reeled in 54 catches for 996 yards for an average of 18.4 per reception. He also amassed 126 yards on punt returns giving him 1,121 all-purpose yards this year.
Smith finished the season with six plays of 50-plus yards, including his career high and the sixth longest in school history of 83 yards at Jacksonville State. Smith ranks eighth in touchdowns in the TSU single season record book and seventh in receiving yards with 996. He was also named the OVC Offensive Player of the Week and Newcomer of the Week after finishing with 248 yards, second best in school history, against Murray State (11/7).
Dunker played in all ten games this season on the front line for the Tigers. The Boynton Beach, Fla. product anchored a line that rushed for over 1,200 yards, averaged just over a sack per game and finished fifth in the nation in time of possession at 33:55.
Ackerman-Carter played in seven games in his first campaign as signal caller. The Jacksonville, Fla. native was 110-of-190 for 1,279 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions to finish with a 182.28 efficiency rating. Ackerman-Carter was honored as OVC Newcomer of the Week for his performance against Jackson State at the Southern Heritage Classic on Sept. 12.
