Saunders Named Defensive Player of the Week

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee State senior De’Ante Saunders was named OVC and Tennessee Sports Writers Association (TSWA) Defensive Player of the Week by the league office, Sunday.

Saunders intercepted two passes against Jackson State and ran his first one back 45 yards for a touchdown when the score was just 14-0.

The Deland, Fla. native has recorded three picks in his last two games, and is tied for the lead in the FCS in interceptions per game (1.0).

Saunders also recorded three tackles and broke up one pass against the Tigers en route to being named the Defensive MVP of the Southern Heritage Classic.

The cornerback helped a defensive unit that held JSU to minus-one yard rushing, a one-for-16 line on third down tries and recorded seven sacks.

Saunders and the rest of the Tigers will return to Hale Stadium to face Tennessee Tech next Saturday at 2 p.m.
